Electrical firm Hulse goes to the wall

Electrical contractor Hulse has gone under after 26 years with the loss of 160 jobs, Construction News reported.

The £25m turnover firm, which was founded by chairman Steve Hulse in 1985, had a range of prestigious contracts under its belt including Birmingham’s Edgbaston cricket ground.

It worked with major contractors including Lend Lease, Laing O’Rourke and Redrow.

The 160 job losses hit the firm’s headquarters in Sutton Coldfield and offices in Glasgow, Oxford, and Bristol.

The company had recently been awarded a £1.8m contract to complete mechanical and electrical installation on the next phase of the Waterfront South development in Walsall. The project was due for completion next summer.

It had also worked on a number of hotel projects in and around Birmingham, including the refurbishment of the Crowne Plaza, as well as commercial sites such as the Blythe Valley Business Park.

David Bennett and David Dunckley of Grant Thornton were appointed join administrative receivers of the company last month.

Bennett said: “Hulse had been suffering cash flow difficulties and although various solutions had been explored by the directors to save the business, none were ultimately successful.”

At the time of the administration the company was being run by managing director Stuart Hulse together with directors John Hulse, Ian Lambert, John Bird and Ricky Cabrey.
